Showcase 2/1/08: Flogging Molly

I don't know how to describe this band. There are funny tunes, drinking songs, old memories, rebel rousing and even a few folk tales thrown in. I've loved this band since I first listened to their album "Drunken Lullabies". There is a new CD coming out which I urge you all to buy, it's definitely worth it.

Without further ado:

Alive Behind The Green Door - Flogging Molly

Description
Flogging Molly: Dave King (vocals, guitars); Ted Hutt (guitar); Toby McCallum (mandolin); Bridget Regan (fiddle); Jeff Peters (electric bass); George Schwindt (drums). Recording information: Molly Malone's, Los Angeles, California (1997). Recorded in 1997 in the band's hometown of Los Angeles, ALIVE BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR captures the Irish-folk-punk band Flogging Molly at their fiery, passionate best. The band themselves admit to being uncomfortable in the studio, preferring the intensity and spontaneity of live performance as the true representation of the group's rollicking energy. This engaging live set is a case in point. The amped-up jig of "Swagger" kicks off the proceedings, and crowd favorites "Laura" and "Lilah" are given fine readings. The crowd noise and audience participation will help listeners feel like they're actually there, and while the sound quality on ALIVE may not be up to the standards of some audiophiles, the trade-off is worth it given the band's full-throttle performance.

Track List
1 Swagger
2 Every Dog Has Its Day

6 If I Ever Leave This World Alive

Drunken Lullabies - Flogging Molly

Description
Flogging Molly includes: Dave King (vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, bodhran, spoons); Nathan Maxwell (vocals, bass); Dennis Carsey (electric guitar, background vocals); Robert Schmidt (banjo, bouzouki, mandolin, background vocals); Bridget Regan (fiddle, whistle, Uilleann pipes); Matt Hensley (accordion); George Schwindt (drums). Engineers include: Steve Albini, Patrick Shevelin, Ted Hutt. Recorded at Electrical Audio, Chicago, Illinois; EMG Studios, Los Angeles, California. Let's get one thing straight right off the bat; they're not the Pogues. The casual listener might be forgiven for making such a mistake, as Flogging Molly is clearly influenced by Shane McGowan's rabble-rousers, but beyond the combination of lyrical Irish folk with punky rock rhythms, Flogging Molly is a band with its own identity. As the accordion, fiddle and banjo toss off traditional sounds steeped in Irish musical history, the slamming drums, raging guitar, and of course vocalist/songwriter Dave King's colorful tales present a forceful rock outfit. "What's Left of the Flag" shows Flogging Molly's political acumen, while "The Sun Never Shines (On Closed Doors)" takes on larger, more metaphysical subjects. But whether the septet, who wield pennywhistles and pipes as easily as Telecasters and Stratocasters, are playing the role of rowdies or reinventing the folk ballad with rocker fury, their emotional commitment is palpable and total.

Track List
1 Drunken Lullabies
2 What's Left Of The Flag
3 May The Living Be Dead (In Our Wake)
4 If I Ever Leave This World Alive
5 Kilburn High Road, The
6 Rebel's Of The Sacred Heart
7 Swagger
8 Cruel Mistress
9 Death Valley Queen
10 Another Bag Of Bricks
11 Rare Ould Times, The
12 Son Never Shines, The (On Closed Doors)

Within A Mile Of Home - Flogging Molly

Description
Flogging Molly: Dave King (vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, bodhran, spoons); Nathen Maxwell (vocals, bass instrument); Dennis Casey (electric guitar, background vocals); Robert Schmidt (banjo, bouzouki, mandola, mandolin, background vocals); Bridget Regan (fiddle, whistle, Uilleann pipe, background vocals); Matt Hensley (accordion, concertina); George Schwindt (drums, percussion). Additional personnel include: Lucinda Williams (vocals); Lee Thornburg (horns); Craig Jackman. Recording information: Hollywood Sound Recorders, Hollywood, California; Cello Studios, Hollywood, California; Ocean Studios, Burbank, California. For its third album, WITHIN A MILE OF HOME, Flogging Molly continues to follow the lead of musical predecessors the Pogues by seamlessly bridging the chasm between traditional Irish music and punk rock. Fans can credit frontman Dave King, who went from membership in Motorhead offshoot Fastway to leading a septet that makes a glorious noise via copious amounts of fiddle, tin whistle, and accordion, with equally large doses of guitar. Flogging Molly rides a ramshackle rhythm that doesn't let up throughout 15 songs that would be equally at home in CBGB's or a pub. King's broad interests range from a recounting of Irish slaves being sent to Barbados by English leader Oliver Cromwell ("Tobacco Island") and music's role in keeping Celtic tradition alive throughout historical turmoil ("The Wanderlust") to outrage at Bush's warmongering in the name of God ("Screaming at the Wailing Wall"). Lucinda Williams's guest vocals on "Factory Girls" may come as a surprise initially, but once this tale of an Irish housekeeper gets rolled out, Fairport Convention-like nuances reverberate. WITHIN A MILE OF HOME is yet another example of Irish culture and punk going together wonderfully, like corned beef and cabbage.

Track List
1 Screaming At The Wailing Wall
2 Seven Deadly Sins, The
3 Factory Girls - (with Lucinda Williams)
4 To Youth (My Sweet Roisin Dubh)
5 Whistles The Wind
6 Light Of A Fading Star, The
7 Tobacco Island
8 Wrong Company, The
9 Tomorrow Comes A Day Too Soon
10 Queen Anne's Revenge
11 Wanderlust, The
12 Within A Mile Of Home
13 Spoken Wheel, The
14 With A Wonder And A Wild Desire
15 Don't Let Me Die Still Wondering

Showcase 1/25: Sonic Youth

There are a lot of links in this blog, eh? Well I want to do something new for Punk Terrorist; every Friday night will be a showcase. I will highlight a favorite band of mine and provide links for their tunes. To kick it off, I've picked Sonic Youth.

Sonic Youth is a favorite of mine or a couple reasons - namely because of the guitar and instrument control. The albums have a great sound to them; they stand the test of time, bypassing most of the shit these days.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I have over the years:
